Year 6 learning about Holocaust Memorial Day

27th January 2023
Holocaust Memorial Day is held on 27th January each year.  On the 27th, Mrs Rawlins worked with both Year 6 classes and their teachers to learn about HMD.
We learned about the stories of Renie Inow, who escaped to safety on a Kindertransport train, and of the Veseli family, an Albanian Muslim family, who hid a family of Jewish people from Greece for over a year to help them to escape being taken captive by the German soldiers.

The children wrote questions and statements they had been thinking about whilst hearing the stories.
We looked at the names of some of the millions of people who were killed in the Holocaust during World War II.  We could also see on the lists which country they lived in and how old they were.

We wrote the names respectfully onto paper and then added them to two scupltures we made to represent 'Ordinary People' (the theme for HMD this year).
We used paper in shades of purple to make the HMD logo.
We went into the KS2 playground to the grassy area to see two trees which were planted in May 2022 in remembrance of Jewish families and children who were given refuge in Cambridge during World War II.  The trees are growing well!
