Black History Month
21st October 2021
In our assembly for Thursday 21st October, we were able to find out more about an ex-pupil from our school, who is being a great inspiration to others by using her talent for writing and performing poetry to speak up in support of equality, diversity and respect for each other. See below Mrs Rawlins' assembly about Aminah Rahman, and then also 3 clips of Aminah performing her poetry for others to learn from and appreciate.
There is also a link to the song which we used this morning. It is called 'Power in Me', and it reminds us in a very powerful way that we each have the power and ability to make our voices heard when we speak up about injustice or unkindness.
Aminah performing 3 of her poems: 'Please', 'Choose to Challenge' and a poem in celebration of South Asian Heritage Day.
In our assembly on Monday 18th October, we found out about Stormzy's commitment to provide funding for a number of talented Black British students to attend Cambridge University.
In our assembly on Thursday 14th October, we were finding out a bit more about the story of Ruby Bridges. Please do watch the video below! There is also a link to a short song which we also watched, written about Martin Luther King Jr. It's very catchy as easy to pick up!
In our assembly on Monday 11th October, we thought a bit about what being proud means. The theme of Black History Month this year is 'Proud to Be'. We returned to think a bit more about Marcus Rashford. The assembly video is below - please do watch it!
In our assembly on Friday 8th October, we found out a bit more about Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, MBE. She is a well-known Science communicator with a passion for everything to do with space! You can watch the assembly video below.
In assembly this week the children have learned all about the story of Betty Campbell. She was an inspirational Headteacher from Wales. She was also the first Black Headteacher in Wales. There has recently been a statue put up in her honour. You can click on the video below to watch the assembly.
We will be taking part in the annual Show Racism The Red Card event again this year. We would like as many people as possible (children, staff, parents, carers) to dress in red on Friday 22nd October 2021.
We'd love to turn the whole school red to underline our commitment to equality, and saying NO to racism.
