Black History Month - Dame Jocelyn Barrow

16th October 2023
In our Monday assembly, we learned a bit about Dame Jocelyn Barrow and her contribution to equality during her lifetime.

She was born in Trinidad and qualified as a teacher before coming to the UK in 1959.  Over the next 60 years of her life, she worked particularly in the area of stopping discrimination and racism in education, housing and employment particularly.  She was a Governor of the BBC and was on many high-status committees, which meant that she was a very influential person, especially in being one of the founders of the Campaign Against Racial Discrimination (CARD) in 1964.

In 1992, she was made a Dame in recognition of her work throughout her lifetime.  She was the first Black woman to be awarded this honour.
