National Poetry Day 2022

6th October 2022
The whole school celebrated National Poetry Day on Thursday 6th October. Children across the school enjoyed listening to poetry, learnt and recited poems and also wrote their own beautiful poetry all on the theme of 'The Environment'. Have a look to see what the different year groups got up to...
Reception
Children in Class 1 and 2 learned the poem ‘Falling Apples’ and discussed signs of Autumn they’d noticed in their Welly Wednesday session. Children joined in with actions to help them learn the poem and enjoyed printing apple pictures. Some children collaged a large apple using tissue paper, some drew careful observational drawings of apples, and others enjoyed looking closely at apples using magnifying glasses.
Year 1
In Year 1, we went for a walk around the school grounds and looked for green, brown and blue things. We used our observations to write colour poems. We then collected some leaves and made a border of leaf rubbings to decorate our poems.
Year 2
Year 2 read and wrote Autumn senses poems for National Poetry Day. We went on a senses walk to gather ideas and then wrote our poems using the adjectives.
Year 3
Year 4
Year 4 had a wonderful time celebrating National Poetry Day outdoors.  We wrote Kennings about our wonderful forest area and why it means so much to us!
Year 5
In Year 5, we focussed on a poem called ‘Morwenstow’ by Charles Causley. We read the poem multiple times to work out who the different ‘voices’ within the poem were. We then split the class in half, one half being the sea and the other half being the questioner and performed it out loud altogether. After this, we added some actions for the sea's lines, which you can see in the photos. We also spent time sharing our favourite poems!
Year 6
In Year 6 we learnt all about haikus. These are three line poems that originated from Japan. A haiku has 5 syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second line and five in the third line. We went on to collect words and phrases to help write our own haikus about the rainforests.
